What We Fix
Ice makers fail more often than any other appliance in a premium kitchen, and on the Front Range the reason is usually the water. Castle Rock and the surrounding towns draw hard, mineral-rich water that leaves scale on valves, fill tubes, and evaporator plates. Over a season that scale is enough to slow production, cloud the cubes, or stop the machine entirely. We repair the ice maker built into a Sub-Zero refrigerator or column as well as standalone clear-ice and nugget machines from Sub-Zero, Scotsman, and other makers.
The two questions we answer first are whether water is reaching the module and whether the module is harvesting. From there the fault usually points to one part: a valve, a fill tube, a module, a sensor, or the cooling that freezes the batch. Parts needs and availability are confirmed after model-specific diagnosis.
Common Problems We See
- No ice at all, most often a closed or scaled water valve, a frozen fill tube, or a failed module.
- Slow or partial batches, usually scale on the evaporator plate or low water flow.
- Cloudy, small, or hollow cubes from a dirty system, an old filter, or a supply problem.
- Ice with an off taste or smell, a filter and cleaning issue accelerated by hard water.
- A machine that leaks from a cracked fill tube, a loose fitting, or a blocked drain on gravity-drain models.
- Dispenser jams where the auger or chute stops delivering ice on a through-door unit.
Typical Causes
Hard water is the thread running through almost every ice-maker call we take. Scale narrows the water valve until the module cannot fill a full batch, coats the evaporator so cubes form cloudy and small, and clogs the fill tube so ice backs up and jams the harvest. A machine that has never been descaled will eventually stop, even if every part still works. The other common failure is the fill valve itself, which is electrically simple but sits at the end of a long water line and fails from age and sediment. On standalone clear-ice machines the sealed cooling can also weaken, and that refrigerant work is handled by our Refrigeration service planned for the diagnosed scope technicians.
Before You Book
Note the brand and model, whether the machine is built into a refrigerator or standalone, and what you are seeing: no ice, slow ice, cloudy ice, or a leak. Check that the water supply valve behind or below the unit is fully open. When the machine was last cleaned or descaled is useful to know too.
Symptom and Cause Table
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What We Check |
|---|---|---|
| No ice | Water valve, fill tube, or module | Valve flow, fill path, module operation |
| Slow or small batches | Scale on the evaporator plate | Water flow, plate cleaning, cycle time |
| Cloudy or off-taste ice | Old filter or dirty system | Filter, cleaning, water supply |
| Leaking | Cracked fill tube or blocked drain | Fittings, fill tube, drain line |
| Dispenser jam | Auger, chute, or motor fault | Auger drive, chute flap, motor |
