What Is Usually Behind It
An oven that will not heat has a short list of causes that depend on whether it is gas or electric. On an electric oven, the bake or broil element does the heating, and a failed element, often with a visible break or blister, is the most common reason the cavity stays cold. On a gas oven, the bake igniter both lights the gas and signals the safety valve to open; as it weakens with age it eventually cannot draw enough current to open the valve, so the oven never lights even though the igniter still glows faintly. On both, the temperature sensor and control can also be at fault: a sensor reading wrong can make the control think the oven is already hot, so it never calls for heat.
Because the same cold-oven symptom has several causes, we measure rather than guess. We test the element or igniter, read the temperature sensor, and confirm the control is calling for heat, then verify the actual cavity temperature against the setpoint. At Castle Rock elevation we also recalibrate where an oven reads a few degrees off, so baking behaves the way recipes expect above 6,000 feet.
