What Is Usually Behind It
A frost-free freezer stays clear because it runs an automatic defrost cycle several times a day: a heater warms the evaporator just enough to melt the frost, and the melt water drains away. When frost starts building and will not go away, that cycle has stopped working. The three usual culprits are a defrost heater that has burned open, a defrost thermostat that will not close to power the heater, or a control that is no longer starting the cycle. A door seal that lets warm, humid air into the cabinet adds moisture that freezes faster than any defrost cycle can keep up with, so we check the gasket too.
Frost is not just cosmetic. As it sheets over the evaporator, it blocks the airflow that carries cold from the freezer to the fresh-food side, so a frost problem quietly becomes a not-cooling problem. Catching it while it is still a defrost fault means a heater or thermostat repair rather than a warm refrigerator and spoiled food.

A Safe Stopgap
If food is at risk you can manually defrost by emptying the freezer and letting the ice melt with the door open, catching the water with towels. This buys time, but if the defrost system has failed the frost will return in days, so book a visit to fix the cause.
