What Is Usually Behind It
When a refrigerator stops holding temperature, the fault is almost always in one of four systems. Airflow can be blocked when the evaporator fan stops turning or a damper sticks closed, so cold air never reaches the fresh-food side. The defrost system can fail, letting frost build on the evaporator until it chokes off that airflow. The condenser can clog with dust so the sealed system cannot shed heat. And the sealed system itself, the compressor and refrigerant circuit, can weaken and lose capacity. On a built-in with two independent sealed systems, such as a Sub-Zero, one compartment can go warm while the other stays perfectly cold, which narrows the search considerably.
A common and often overlooked cause in our area is a dirty condenser. Douglas County homes are dry and dusty, and a condenser packed with dust and pet hair makes the compressor labor until the cabinet slowly warms. Cleaning it restores performance in many cases. When the cause runs deeper, into the defrost circuit or the sealed system, that is where a brand-focused diagnosis pays off, because the wrong guess on a sealed-system fault is an expensive one.
Notes by Brand
Sub-Zero: two sealed systems mean a warm refrigerator with a cold freezer usually points to the fresh-food evaporator fan or a defrost fault on that circuit. The microprocessor logs data that guides the diagnosis.
Wolf: Wolf is a cooking brand, so a "not cooling" call typically pairs with a Sub-Zero refrigerator in the same kitchen; we handle both in a diagnostic visit, with follow-up timing based on parts availability.
Bosch and Thermador: these report cooling and sensor faults through display codes, which speeds up isolating a thermistor or fan.
Liebherr: temperature alarms and E-codes on the display flag a sensor or fan issue before the cabinet gets far out of range.
Miele, Viking, Monogram, and Dacor: each routes cooling loss a little differently, but the same four systems apply, and we test them in order rather than assuming.
Protect the Food While You Wait
Keep the doors closed to hold whatever cold remains, move the most perishable items to a working unit or cooler if the cabinet is climbing, and note any code on the display. Do not unplug the unit unless you see a safety issue, since cycling it can mask the fault.
Symptom and Cause Table
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What We Check |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh food warm, freezer cold | Evaporator fan or defrost fault | Fan motor, defrost circuit, damper |
| Both compartments warming | Condenser, seal, or sealed system | Condenser, gasket, compressor, charge |
| Runs constantly, still warm | Dirty condenser or low charge | Condenser cleaning, sealed-system test |
| Frost on rear panel | Defrost heater or thermostat | Heater, defrost thermostat, control |
| Display temperature alarm | Sensor or fan reported by control | Thermistor, fan, control diagnostics |
